Policies
AtlanticHedgehogs.com are not anti Pet Store but in our opinion, Pet Stores are not the best place to by this type of pet. Often pet shop employees are not that familiar with or know very little about hedgehogs or STO's, nor do they care enough about animals to offer any advice to prospective buyers. They may not be able to answer any questions about hedgehogs that more breeders can. Many hedgehogs sold in pet stores do have a tendency to be unsocial as they often do not get handled everyday. (Usually employees don’t have the time to play with them enough and some are even intimidated by their quills). Most pet stores will also not tell you the history or the temperament of the hedgehog, and definitely not guarantee its health once it has left the store. Once a hedgehog is timid it can be worked with but can be very hard to get them calm again. Normally, a social hedgehog, once it is familiar with a person scent, does not use its' quills, unless they are frightened or startled. Remember, Hedgehogs have personality too.

AtlanticHedgehogs.com do not belong or endorse any organized hedgehog associations.
We do not show our hedgehogs. Most shows are held in the USA and it is very difficult and expensive to bring hedgehogs into the USA. We do not register our hedgehogs as we do not feel the need to waste the money to do so to a club that we have no involvement with. However if you want to register your hedgehogs after you buy one from us, we can help you through the process. We keep accurate health records and pedigrees on all of our breeding stock and will provide them upon request, to breeders specializing in rarer colors, provided that we are asked to do so prior to or at the time of purchase. For the most part we have found that knowing the genetic color coding usually does not matter and may not be worth the additional expense to someone keeping a pet hedgehog or two.
Pricing
For a pet, you will pay around $150.00 for a normal colored male hedgehog, (from a good breeder. Some of the newer and unusual color morphs tend to be rarer and therefore more costly than a normal gray /brown hedgehog. Males usually are a bit less expensive and females are $175.00. Although most Hedgehogs are still considered a reasonably priced pet… for quality Pintos and extreme fancies you may pay sometimes higher, depending on the pedigree of the animal.
We do however, breed hedgehogs that can come in many different colors and patterns. We have Salt & Pepper, Grey, Cinnamon, Brown, and Chocolate. These are considered our "normal" hedgehogs. Our fancies include Dark-eyed Cinnecot, Apricot, Champagne,Albino, Ruby-eyed Cinnecot, and Pintos.
We sometimes get on occasion our "extreme fancies", they are colors such as Chocolate Chip, Snowflake, Double whites, platinum, and Charcoal etc.
Our Short-tailed Opossums are normally $100 for a male and $125 for the females. Once again prices can vary as they also come in some different varieties which can be more expensive.
